The Ministry of Human Resource and Emiratisation announced the UAE midday break timings from 12.30 pm to 3.00 pm. During this midday break time, construction workers and other workers are prohibited from working outdoors. The midday break will be observed from 15 June 2018 to 15 September 2018.

During the sizzling summer months, work shall be divided into morning and evening shifts with a total of 8 working hours in a 24-hour period. If workers work longer than 8 hours, they must be compensated with at least 25 % overtime payment.

Please keep in mind that the UAE midday break is mandatory. During the midday break, employers must provide a shady place to rest, cold water and restorative drinks. Inspections will be made at construction sites to ensure that the UAE midday break rules are followed.

Violators will be fined with 5,000 AED per worker, if employees are found working during the break hours. If the violation involves many workers, the fines can reach up to 50,000 AED. Offending businesses also will be downgraded, making them ineligible to apply for any work permits for at least six months. The ministry can also temporarily stop the company from operating.

In exceptional cases, continuous work could be required. Work excluded from the midday break includes any maintenance on water supply, sewerage, electricity, cutting off traffic or blocking public roads, and cutting gas pipelines or petroleum flow. In these exceptional cases, employers must provide workers with cold water and other items including salt and lemon. The employer also needs to provide first aid kits, air-conditioned areas and sunshades.
