Fitness gurus, beauty bloggers and fashionistas are highly paid by brands to encourage their followers to buy the products they promote. Social media influencers spread viral conversations, create the latest trends and often charge up to 5,000 AED for one single post.
Youtubers and Instagram photographers have grown from the average individual to online superstars with thousands of followers. Being a social media influencer in Dubai can be a lucrative business.
What is a social media influencer?
Influencers are persons having the power to affect the purchase decisions of others. Social media influencers are individuals with an expertise on a specific subject and with a certain reputation on social media. They regularly post on Facebook, Instagram & Co. and generate thousands of followers. Social media influencers promote products and can create trends. Brands love social media influencers because they encourage their followers to buy the products they promote.
Celebrities and industry experts were the original influencers, but their importance is vanishing. Often influencers like micro-bloggers on social media create the most authentic and active relationship with their fans. Their posts go viral and create the latest trends. Brands love micro-bloggers and often use them for their marketing campaigns.
Does a UAE social media influencer need a license?
Since 1 June 2018, social media influencers need a media license from the National Media Council (NMC). According to the new regulations for electronic media, UAE social media influencers must also provide a valid free zone license to apply for a NMC media license. Social media influencers in UAE could register for a RAKEZ Freelancer License, get licensed by Dubai Creative Clusters or list with twofour54 in Abu Dhabi. Then, they can apply for their media license with the National Media Council.
The NMC offers UAE social media influencers three types of media license registrations. The first option is an individual influencer license, costing approx. 15,000 AED. The second possibility is an agency that handles a group of influencers. The third registration type is a media company that have influencers tied up exclusively with them.
The National Media Council registered more than 500 media licenses within the first weeks. Any professional social media influencer in Dubai should be registered with the NMC. Also, several brands will stop working with influencers not providing a valid NMC media license.
Please keep in mind that the National Media Council requires a media license from individuals who conduct commercial activities through their social media accounts, such as paid advertisement. Accounts, blogs and personal websites are not subject to these new regulations. Individuals and organizations that voluntarily promote work are also not affected.
